Arun Patua

Arun Patua is an experienced and acclaimed Patachitra artist from Satfalsa village of Birbhum district. From his childhood days Arun has learnt the art from his father Baku Patua and over the years he excelled in the artform. Arun Patua works mostly on long Patachitra scrolls narrating mythological stories and themes. He has participated in fairs across West Bengal and has exhibited his artworks at Bhopal, Delhi, Tripura and Guwahati.

Sahajahan Chitrakar is a resident of Pingla village in Paschim Medinipur. He is being practicing the art for over 20 years. In early days, Ranjit Chitrakar, father of Uttam Chitrakar was the primary driving force for him. Sahajahan is mostly interested in painting Bengal Patas and is one of the most skilled artists in the area. In 2017, he painted a Pat with a length of 70 feet depicting the Ramayan mythology. Sahajahan and his brother Seramuddiin Chitrakar are the only Patachitra artists who paints large size Pats in the area. He has visited in various places like – Delhi, Hyderabad, Orissa, Chennai and all parts of Bengal. Sahajan Chitrakar has also received a district award.

Monimala Chitrakar

Monimala Chitrakar is a resident of Pingla village in Paschim Medinipur. He is being practicing the art for over 30 years. She learnt the art of painting from the legendary Patachitra artists Dukhushyam Chitrakar. Monimala is mostly interested in painting both Bengal and Santhal Patas. She has presented a Pata on Ramayana in Bhopal. Monimala being one of the most skillful and renowned Patachitra artist has visited many parts of the country and also overseas like – Auckland, London, America, Thailand, Holand, Lithuania, Hungary and many more. Monimala Chitrakar has received award from Rabindra Bharati University in 2001.

Suman Chitrakar

Suman Chitrakar is a resident of Pingla village in Paschim Medinipur. He is being practicing the art for over 17 years. He learnt the art of painting from the Joydeb Chitrakar and Moyna Chitrakar. Suman is mostly interested in painting Santhal Patas. Suman Chitrakar has been a trainer in many workshops. He visited – London and Scotland.

Swarna Chitrakar

Swarna Chitrakar is a traditional scroll painter from the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Born in Naya village of Pingla block in Paschim Medinipur district, she belongs to a family of Patuas who practice a unique folk art of painting-cum-storytelling through songs. Swarna, now in her late forties, has been practicing the art since she was a child. She bagged the state-level award in 1994. Over the last two decades, she has been critically acclaimed across India and abroad. Till the summer of 2018, Swarna had visited the US five times and the UK twice, apart from France, Italy, Germany and Sweden to showcase her art skills, to collaborate with artists and to participate in residency programs. Her paintings are bought by connoisseurs and collectors.

Anwar is a leading Patachitra artist from Naya, Pingla. He started painting Pat while he was in school under the guidance of his father Amar Chitrakar. He paints on themes of religion, environmental degradation, surrogate mother, issues relating to transgender and extra-marital affair. He has showcased his creations in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. He was awarded by the Rabindra Bharati University, the Tourism Department of Delhi and has won a National Award in 2006

Mamoni Chitrakar, daughter of Swarna Chitrakar has been painting Patas and singing the songs related to the form since childhood. She has been trained at home by her mother and specializes in paintings on Manasha Mangal and Chandi Mangal. Influenced by seniors, Mamoni has also painted on issues like HIV, 9/11 and Tsunami. She has showcased her art at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and also at Italy and Bahrain. She participated in a cultural exchange program with Smithsonian Centre for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, visited Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2018 in Washington, D.C. and performed at cultural institutions like Freer|Sackler gallery.

Rupsona Chitrakar, 22 years old, is a patachitra artist of Pingla. Rupsona is an expert in painting on tribal themes. She started painting at the age of six and learnt from her father Bahadur Chitrakar and grandmother Baharjan Chitrakar. She paints on religious themes and works on apparels as well. She has participated in exhibitions and fairs in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore and Pune.

She paints square/ rectangular (Chouka) Pat, Scroll (Jorano) Pat and draws on traditional themes like stories from the two Epics as well as on contemporary issues like Kanyashree Scheme of Government of West Bengal, gender discrimination, Nirbhaya rape case of 2012, 9/11 and 2004 Tsunami.
