Dhokra is a handloom tradition of weaving jute mats in the rural areas of Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur districts. Weaving is done on home-based back-strap looms. Jute, the ‘Golden Fibre’, is available locally and is the raw material used to make Dhokra mats and other products. Dhokra weaving provides livelihood to hundreds of women in the area.
Dhokra as an art form has been included since RCCH I (2016 onwards). There are 1468 Dhokra weavers in Uttar Dinajpur and 2634 weavers in Dakshin Dinajpur.
