In Bengal, the word Madur is a generic word for floor mats. Mats are an integral part of Bengal’s lifestyle. It is a tradition and pride of Medinipur. Typically women of the households are involved in weaving this beautiful craft. It is sold in the local markets for day-to-day use and also transported to adjoining states to be used for ritualistic purposes. With the shift in market needs, weavers are also making decorative and utilitarian items. Madur has received the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2018. The interevention with Madur was supported by West Bengal Khadi Industries Board (WBKVIB) in the first phase. Latter, Madur as a cluster got included in RCCH II (2021 onwards) and covers a total of 6675 weavers. Madur has been accredited with the tag of Geographical Indication (GI) in the year 2018.
