Uttam Kumar Pal

Uttam Kumar Pal of Chaltaberia is a master craftsman of terracotta art. He learnt the technicalities of the craft from his father Late Lalit Kumar Karmakar and has been engaged in it for 35 years. Uttam has participated in various trainings like Rural Entrepreneurship Development programme in Kolkata, specialized training on terracotta in Maharashtra in 2003 and on pottery at Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, 2005. Uttam has also attended a Product Development workshop at Salt Lake, Kolkata in 2007 and received training on design on pottery in New Delhi. He has received state awards 6 times and is the recipient of Rajya Charukala Award in 2006, award from NABARD, Kala Nidhi Award at Surajkund Mela in 2008. His craft has also fetched him awards at the international level from UNESCO in 2008, from South Korea in 2009 and from World Craft Council in 2014. Uttam showcased his craft in various exhibitions held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Odisha, Kolkata and Haryana. Besides these, his work has taken him to foreign shores like Italy, Spain, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Japan Presently; he is also running his own unit, R.M. Terracotta Pottery House.

Apu Pal

Apu Pal is a young pottery artist of Chaltaberia and has been working in this craft for the last 5 years. He has learnt this craft from Swapan Pal who is also a resident of Chaltaberia. He makes wide variety of pottery items like flower pot, water bottles, lamp shades and other fine pottery work as per the sample he gets from the shopkeepers and the emporiums from places like Delhi, Bombay, Nagpur, Hyderabad etc. However Apu does not participate in fairs directly.

Kamal Pal

Kamal Pal has been working on this craft for the last 15 years and tuned his artistic skill under the guidance of Uttam Pal of Chaltaberia. He has received a specialized training on terracotta work and makes terracotta items like flower vase, lamp shade, and other decorative items. He is involved in the entire process of making the product, including colouring of finished products. Kamal has participated in numerous fairs across the country in Delhi, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. Apart from these, Kamal also visited Germany to attend an international event.

Dulal Chandra Ray

Dulal Chandra Ray is a potter from Uttar Dinajpur district. He belongs to a family of potters and has learnt the craft from his father late Narendranath Roy. He makes traditional pottery items, jewellery, bottles, jugs and decorative items. Ray has participated in fairs in Delhi, Goa, Pune, Odisha, Jaipur and Kolkata. He has won both the District and State level Award and is a master craftsman and gives training to his fellow villagers.

Rabi Roy

Rabi Roy has been practising pottery for the last 16 years. He has received training on the craft from DC Handicrafts in 2003-04. He makes traditional pottery items as well as magic lamps, lampshades, diyas, incense stick holders, flower vase and other decorative items. He has participated in fairs in Kolkata, Goa, Bardhaman and Asansol, Medinipur,Shantiniketan and has made a name for himself in pottery.

Prafulla Roy

Prafulla Roy is a young potter of Kunoor, Haatpara in Uttar Dinajpur district. He is into pottery for the last 20 years and has learnt from his uncle Dulal Chandra Roy, an ace craftsman. He makes decorative items like flower vase, pen stands,diyas, crockeries and jugs. Roy has participated in fairs in Kolkata, Gangtok and Siliguri and is also a recipient of the District Award 2011.
