Arun Khatua is an excellent Madur artist who belongs to Pingla, Paschim Medinipur. His experiential journey of promoting the loom-based Madur craft of Bengal is very inspiring. Pingla is known for Patachitra but is also famous for Madur weaving. Growing up in a village that houses multiple artists and the traditional cultural heritage inspired him to learn the art of making Madur craft. In 1989 he attended design training and got associated with the Madurkathi craft. Being a first-generation Madur artist, in 2001, he established Belun Hasthashilpo Kuti Society. Today, working with around 30 artisans, the organization is producing diversified products and supplying to various local and national exhibitions, fairs and sustainable client houses like Sasha. He has also developed a small-scale dyeing unit to expand his business.

Nishikanto Jana

Nishikanto Jana is a well-known and highly skilled Madur artist belonging to Sarta Village of Sabang Block. Finely woven Mataranchis with the use of dyed sticks were introduced in the market by him. He is an expert in dyeing natural fibers. Several major craft houses have worked with him for his expertise. This range of products has found acclaim across India. He has received several accolades at the National and State level.

Mithu Rani Jana belongs to Sarta Village of Sabang Block. She is one of the finest Madur artists, who represented the craft in different corners of the country. she has been participating in several workshops fairs, exhibitions and festivals in many cities for years. Recently, she received National Award for her amazing work.

Tapas Jana

Tapas Jana is from the Sabang region of Medinipur. He has been associated with Madurkathi weaving since childhood. He is very skillfully trained in Mataranch weaving and fine thread weaving technique. Since 1991 he has been awarded 5 times by the state for his works. He has participated in several workshops and competitions in many cities of the country. Recently, he has been honored with National Award.

Kalyani Maity

Kalyani Maity is a resident of Makrami Chowk village under Sabang block of Paschim Medinipur. She is associated with the art of Madur weaving for the past 10 years. Kalyani has learnt the art of weaving Madur by taking vocational training classes and later, her uncle Hari Das taught her. In the earlier stage, She used to take orders from Chandan Mula an eminent Madur artist and gradually with time, she started started her own unit by the name Kalyani Matts. Along with production, she has also helped many women by providing them skill development training to weave Madur which also generated an economic flow among the village. The products she is expert in making are – laptop bags, files, and other utility and home décor items. All through her art jouney, Kalyani has participated in many fairs and exhibitions in Delhi, Mumbai, Bolpur, Rourkela and Rajasthan. Kalyani Maity has received the GI certificate in the year 2022.

Tapas Gayen

Tapas Gayen is a resident of Adisimla village of Paschim Medinipur. He is associated with the art of Madur weaving for the past 10 years. Tapas has learnt the art of weaving Madur traditionally from his father Adwaitya Gayen. He started his own unit by the name Tapas Matt factory. The product Tapas is expert in making is floor matt. He is considered the best in starting the warf process for weaving by setting the threads on to the drum for getting colour patterns. All through his journey, Tapas Gayen has participated in fairs around Bolpur and Kolkata.

Srikanto Mandal

Srikanto Mandal is a resident of Gangra village under Pingla block of Paschim Medinipur. He is associated with the art of Madur weaving for the past 15 years. Srikanto has learnt the art of weaving Madur from the renowned Madur artist Arun Khatua. He started his own unit by the name Tiya Matt Centre. The products Srikanto is expert in making are - floor matt, table matt and runners, hats, Wall hangings and curtains. He is considered the best in making table matts and curtains. Pabitra Samanta, a young Madur artist from Bankebheri Village of Pataspur I block, runs a Madur unit named Samanta Mat Unit. His father started the business with the entire family and Pabitra joined his hand after completing his post-graduation degree. Pabitra is not just a businessman but a prudent member of the community sustaining the traditional heritage and providing livelihood to 25-30 women of his village. Several businessmen based on the beaches of Digha procure their produce.

Ranjit Guchait is a Madur entrepreneur who has a unit by the name of Barbasudevpur Pragati Mat Centre where 35 artisans are working every day. The unit has received the Craftmark certificate as a result of sticking to certain international norms for the handicraft industry. The unit produces pedal loom based Madur and makes a wide range of products such as table mats, table runners, bags, window blinds, folders, magazine holders, bottle holders, toiletry pouch etc. He is also a secretary of a Madur weavers’ society, established in the district of Purba Medinipur called Purba Medinipur Pajankul Madur Bayan Silpi Kalyan Samity. He has participated in different festivals in Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi and also in Goa.

Biswajit Dutta is an eminent Madur artist from Pajankul village under Bhagabanpur-I block of Purba Medinipur. He is associated with the art of Madur weaving for the past 20 years. Biswajit has learnt the art of weaving Madur traditionally from his family. He started his own unit by the name Dutta Kutir Shilpalay and also a member of Purba Medinipur Pajankul Madur Bayan Shilpa Kalyan Samity. The product range of Biswajit are - floor matt, table matt and runners, hats, Wall hangings and curtains. He is considered the best in making files, bags and pen stands. All through his journey, Biswajit has participated in fair around West Bengal, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Goa and Chhattisgarh.

Sushanta Sasmal is a renowned Madur artist from Bhatda village under Egra –II block of Purba Medinipur. He is associated with the art of Madur weaving for the past 15 years. Sushanta has learnt the art of weaving Madur from block level training program under the observation of expert Madur weaver Mr Purna Ch. Giri. He started his own unit by the name Sasmal Hastashilpo Sambhar. The unit produces a wide range of products like - folding matts, water bottle holders, bags, table matt & runners, curtains, etc. All through these years, Susanta Sasmal has visited for exhibitions and fairs in – Digha, Haldia and Birbhum.
