92 years Hem Chandra Mahato is a pioneer of Puruliia chau. He is from Palma village of Barabazar Block. His immense contribution provided a new identity in Puruliia chau . He learnt chau dance from his father and grandfather both at the age of 12. Being dropped out in class VIII, he emphasized more to practice chau dance in their village team. Immediately, he created his own identity by his inexplicable performance. His village team was famous for the production of “Mel Naach & Krishnalila” . This veteran artist visited many places across the country.

Debilal, a renowned chau artist of the district was born on 22nd October 1960 in the village Kharipahari of Barabazar Block. His father late Shibu Karmakar was one of the finest dhol player in the district. Debilal started his basics from his father and gradually involved in this profession as well. His father introduced him first in the stage show program when Debilal was 13 years of age. After this programme he was being praised by many and became popular at his young age. At the same time he received invitation from Dr. Sukhendu Biswas, Founder of Royal Chau Academy –Balarampur to associate and perform as a dhol player in his Chau team. At this time he took the privilege to perform in abroad too. He Visited Russia In 1999. Thailand in 2000, Belgium, France, Lithonia, Spain, Greece, Poland in 2006, Iran, Iraq, Tehran in 2009, London, Scotland, America, Newyork, Washington , Brazil in the year of 2011. Debilal is still active in his skill and continuing his support to strengthen his team.

Biren Kalindi is a leading Chau dance artiste from Purulia. He leads a troupe named Biren Kalindi Chau Nach Gosthi that was formed in the year 2006. There are 20 members in the troupe. The troupe specializes in enacting plays from mythological stories like Ramayan, Mahabharat and the Puranas. However, it also presents acts based on issues of social concern. The troupe has performed across West Bengal and in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Odisha. It has also performed overseas, in France, Germany, Switzerland, Lithuania and China.
