Mousumi is a leading woman Chau dancer, an art form native to Purulia in the state of West Bengal in India. By being the first woman to learn and perform Chau, a male bastion for ages, she is an inspiration for other girls learning the art. Born in Maldi village of Balarampur in Purulia, Mousumi started dancing Chau at the age of 10, learning the art from her father, Jagannath Choudhury, an accomplished Chau exponent. Mousumi is pursuing her Master in Arts post-graduation degree in Bengali from Sidhu Kanu University in Purulia. She works as a part time teacher at a local school and teaches Chau dance in her university. She has performed in Kolkata, Purulia and Jhargram and is scheduled to perform in Norway in September 2018.

92 years Hem Chandra Mahato is a pioneer of Puruliia chau. He is from Palma village of Barabazar Block. His immense contribution provided a new identity in Puruliia chau . He learnt chau dance from his father and grandfather both at the age of 12. Being dropped out in class VIII, he emphasized more to practice chau dance in their village team. Immediately, he created his own identity by his inexplicable performance. His village team was famous for the production of “Mel Naach & Krishnalila” . This veteran artist visited many places across the country.

Veteran Chau artist Bhuban Kumar is a Chau dancer was born in 1962 at bamnia village of Jhalda II block in Puruliia . His father Late Prabhudas Kumar was a well-known chau artist of the district. Bhuban Kumar inspired by his father and started to practice dance at the age of 12. Since then his father noticed the passion of this young artist and boosted him to keep continuing his skill. He started to perform in their village team. In 1985 he formed a new chau team and developed some new Production like “ Santhal Bidroho, Sidhu Kanu, Nabab Murshid Kuli Khan, Kargil Juddha” etc which are still popular at the same pace. Apart from Bengal & Jharkhand, Bhuban Kumar performed in many places across the country.

Debilal Karmakar

Debilal, a renowned chau artist of the district was born on 22nd October 1960 in the village Kharipahari of Barabazar Block. His father late Shibu Karmakar was one of the finest dhol player in the district. Debilal started his basics from his father and gradually involved in this profession as well. His father introduced him first in the stage show program when Debilal was 13 years of age. After this programme he was being praised by many and became popular at his young age. At the same time he received invitation from Dr. Sukhendu Biswas, Founder of Royal Chau Academy –Balarampur to associate and perform as a dhol player in his Chau team. At this time he took the privilege to perform in abroad too. He Visited Russia In 1999. Thailand in 2000, Belgium, France, Lithonia, Spain, Greece, Poland in 2006, Iran, Iraq, Tehran in 2009, London, Scotland, America, Newyork, Washington , Brazil in the year of 2011. Debilal is still active in his skill and continuing his support to strengthen his team.

Biren Kalindi

Biren Kalindi is a leading Chau dance artiste from Purulia. He leads a troupe named Biren Kalindi Chau Nach Gosthi that was formed in the year 2006. There are 20 members in the troupe. The troupe specializes in enacting plays from mythological stories like Ramayan, Mahabharat and the Puranas. However, it also presents acts based on issues of social concern. The troupe has performed across West Bengal and in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Odisha. It has also performed overseas, in France, Germany, Switzerland, Lithuania and China.
