CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS
A series of 10 capacity building workshops on traditional performing arts with various indigenous communities of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts was organized in Nakshalbari, Kalimpong, Mirik, Kurseong, Suruk and other places on May - June 2018. These 3-days workshops were supported by local Gurus or experts to retain the original characteristics of the folk art forms.
These workshops were organized with folk artists of 10 communities which were Dhimal, Mangar, Rai, Limbu, Bhutia, Tibetan, Tamang, Sarki, Bhujel, Newar. The training of Dhimal community was held between May 26-28 at Naxalbari and rest of the training of the other 9 communities were held in June 2018. 466 folk artists most of whom were young participated in these workshops. The participants were trained how to showcase their cultural heritage, to perform within 30 minutes time-frame, on proper ways of entry and exit while staging performances.
Advanced Skill Building Workshop
A series of 10 Advanced Skill Building Workshops were organized at Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Suruk, Bijanbari, Sonada, Naxalbari and Loleygaon on August-September 2019. Theses 4-days workshops were supported by eminent choreographers from Kolkata to give the artist a brief idea on how to perform on a proscenium stage. Their performances were stringed together so that when performed on stage the audience can understand the culture and tradition of the communities.
The workshops were organized with 10 communities, Gurung, Sherpa, Khas, Bhutia, Bhujel, Tamang, Dhimal, Limbu, Mangar and Newar. 392 artists participated in the workshops.
Performances at Events & Festivals
Cultural troupes from Tamang, Lepcha and few other communities have participated fairs and festivals to present their colourful traditions like State Khadi Mela, Rabindra Tirtha, Surjahan etc.
