Bardhaman is one of the oldest district capitals of Bengal, dating back to the early British period. Archaeological evidence of the region can be traced back to 4,000 BC. The district has a multi-cultural heritage. The district is a hub of bamboo and shola crafts as well as the acrobatic dance form of Raibenshe and Baul- Fakiri music. It is home to about 66 bamboo craftsmen, 171 shola craftsperson, 57 Raibenshe artists and 151 Baul artists.
