Traditional
In Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Patuas’ large repertoire includes mythical characters from Hinduism, Islam and even from Christianity. While some of their scrolls are on epical characters like Manasa, Behula and Lakshminder, others are on Satyapir and Jesus Christ. Many other topics, like life of tribal people, marriage of fish and stories on wild animals are also painted. Patuas have also painted life stories of famous personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Bidyasagar etc.

Contemporary
Artists from both the districts paint on diferent articles and surfaces like umbrella, clay pots, saree, dupatta etc. The present level of diversification, however, is falling short to match the demand of the contemporary market. However, the artists are increasingly getting opportunity to showcase their painting skill at exhibition galleries and commercial places.
